Overview

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement. You will need to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you with your dentist.

What Caused This

Often patients who have previously had conventional braces seek treatment, as previously aligned teeth have moved back to their original position. This is most commonly due to the lack of wearing a retainer (removable or bonded) long term.

Misaligned teeth is due to a complex interaction between tooth and jaw growth, extra or missing teeth, as well as it running in the family.

When Are They Suitable

Veneers are used routinely to treat:

  • Teeth that have worn down
  • Teeth that are chipped or broken
  • Discoloured teeth- either due to a dyinng tooth, inherited staining from tetracycline, excessive fluoride, large stained old white fillings
  • Misaligned teeth, uneven, or irregularly shaped
  • Teeth with gaps in them (close the space between teeth)

The Procedure

The first visit will always involve finding out the problem a treatment planning what you want to do. It will involve your active participation. We want you to tell us exactly what you want to achieve, we will take x-rays and impressions of you teeth.

The laboratory will send back a waxed mock-up of you teeth. This will give you a good indication of what they will look like after you have had the veneers placed.

1.  We will place numbing gel where we plan to place the anaesthetic, so you are less likely to feel the small pinch. We then wait a minimum of 10 minutes for it to work.

2.  Once you are suitably numb will remove a small amount of the front surface of your teeth to make room for the veneer. If we did not remove any tooth, than the veneer placed, would be an addition and protrude out.

3.  Impression will be taken then sent to the laboratory to be made.

4.  After two weeks once back, we will try-in the veneers and adjust as necessary. We will remove and replace each veneer repeatedly, and adjust the colour with the cement we used if needed.

5.  If the veneers are suitable we will clean, roughen and polish the veneer. Once in the correct position witht he cement we will activate the cement to harden with a special light.

6.  Once in place, we remove excessive cement, check your bite. we will review you in 3-4 weeks to check gum health around the veneers and ensure you are cleaning the gums and teeth efectively.

What To Expect After A Surgery

After the initial preparation you will experience some senstivity from the drilling, over the counter painkiller can be taken if needed. After the veneers have been placed this sensitivity should disappear.

Risks

The full list and explaination of the risks will be outlined in the consent process. As a rough idea the risks are that the process is not reversible, more costly than cosmetic braces and whitening, can dislodge and fall off easier than a crown, not ideal for clenchers or grinders, veeners do not protect from decay, do not work for those with poor gum health, and cannot be repaired if they chip unless replaced.

Alternatives

The modern alternative to veneers is cosmetic bonding, whitening, and white filling bonding. This technique is reversible and conserves your natural tooth tissue. This only applys to cosmetic cases where patients want to change the position or colour of their teeth.

Veneers are still the best solution for inherited staining and discolouration from root filled teeth.

What To Think About

Once placed, a veneer will always stay the same colour while natural teeth will discolour. If you plan on having veneers, you should consider whitening your teeth before treatment. Veneers will usually last between 5-10 years. If thye are still bonded after 10 years, it is likely they would need to be replaced due aesthetics.

You’ll never have to deal with horizontal margins ever again
