Overview

Cosmetic braces are a distinct alternative to conventional metal braces to straighten teeth. They are widely used to straighten teeth as an alternative to veneers, or as a treatment before veneers to minimise healthy tooth removal. We currently prescribe two diffrent treatments.

The Inman Aligner deals with minor corrections of the front 4 teeth. These are the front four incisors top and bottom and are frequently the ones most people are concerned about. The Inman aligner is pre-programmed to stop working once your teeth are straight and therefore you only require one appliance.

Clear braces are see-through and resemble thin gum shields. A series of slightly too tight braces are inserted and slowly move your teeth in a more desirable position. They are very aesthetic and are popular as they do not affect speech and a very comfortable to wear. Due to the weaker forces applied a simlar case will take longer than the Inman aligner alone.

This stands for align, bleach and bond. The is shorthand for a course of treatment that will sequentially straighten (Inman aligner), whiten and add fillings to correct chips to leave you with a beautifully natural result. A package to include all of the above will be discussed at your initial consultation if requested or I feel you could benefit from it.

What Caused This

Often patients who have previously had conventional braces seek treatment, as previously aligned teeth have moved back to their original position. This is most commonly due to the lack of wearing a retainer (removable or bonded) long term.

Misaligned teeth is due to a complex interaction between tooth and jaw growth, extra or missing teeth, as well as it running in the family.

The Procedure

Inman Aligner
1.  After a full consultation we will take pictures, xrays, discuss realistic goals, confirm oral health and take some impressions to be sent to the laboratory. The laboratory will work out the perfect position for your teeth, and set up the aligner to stop working once this is achieved.

2.  The next appointment we will fit the single Inman Aligner and make space between the teeth for them to move into. After which we will place small white blobs, so the aligner does not move away from their intended position.

3.  We will then review the patient at 3 weeks, followd by 2 week intervals, taking pictures and making small adjustment along the way. Most case take between 12-16 weeks.

4.  After the desired result is achieved a permanent bonded wire retainer or clear plastic retainer is provided, to keep the teeth in this position.

Invisalign- Clear gum shield braces
1.  After a full consultation we will take pictures, xrays, discuss realistic goals, confirm oral health and take some impressions to be sent to the laboratory. The laboratory will work out the perfect position for your teeth, and set up a series of clear aligners for you to wear for two weeks at a time.

2.  The next appointment we will fit the first aligner and make space between the teeth for them to move into. After which we will place small white blobs, so the aligner can work more effectively.

3.  We will then review the patient at 3 weeks, followd by 2 week intervals to change to a new aligner, taking pictures and making small adjustment along the way.

4.  After the desired result is achieved a permanent bonded wire retainer or clear plastic retainer is provided, to keep the teeth in this position.

What To Expect After A Surgery

After each appointment wheather having received a new clear aligner or having the Inman Aligner, you will experience some light discomfort from the pressure on you teeth. The pain can be treated with an over the counter dose of paracetamol if appropriate.

Risks

Some of the risks of orthodontic treatment include flare up of non vital teeth, root resorption, jaw joint issues, and relapse. Full details of the risks can be in the orthodontic consent form below..

Alternatives

The alternative to having cosmetic orthodontics is to have conventional metal or tooth coloured brakets and wires. They are still the gold standard of orthodontics and are used to treat the most complex cases as well as the simple. We will refer you to a specialist orthodontist if this is required.

What To Think About

Once you have finished with your cosmetic brace, most patients will decide to have their teeth whitened and cosmetically bonded to. Together this achieved a natural result comparable to a complete smile (veneer) make over.
